World Athletics Vice President Mourns Jairus Birech

World Athletics Vice President Jackson Tuwei led Kenya in mourning the sudden passing away of African athletics champion Jairus Birech, a star in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Birech, born on December 14, 1992, passed away on Thursday night, September 18, after a period of illness. His last competition was the Guadalajara Half Marathon in Mexico in 2020. Tuwei described him as a gifted athlete who brought great pride to the nation.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of Jairus Birech’s passing away. May God grant his family strength, peace, and comfort during this time of grief,” Tuwei said.

Several athletes joined in sending condolences. Milcah Chemos, bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics and 3,000m steeplechase world champion in 2013, and Julius Yego, 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist and 2015 world javelin champion, paid tribute to their late colleague.

“Life! You work hard to make it better for your family and children, and then suddenly you leave the stage, leaving them in sorrow. Rest in peace, Jairus! He was a humble and quiet person, whose only loud voice was on the track. Travel safely,” Yego said.

Family Remembers a Beloved Brother

Birech’s younger brother, Dennis Kibet, also an athlete, revealed that Birech had been sick for about three weeks and was hospitalized for two weeks at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, where his body remains.

“We are heartbroken over his loss. Losing a brother and mentor has never been that easy. We were at the hospital, but he lost the battle last night,” Kibet said.

He added, “Birech loved athletics deeply. Even after retiring from track events, he continued participating in road races, inspiring many people, myself included, to take up the sport. He will be remembered fondly. Family and friends have been gathering in Elgon View and Chebarus, Kesses, to plan his funeral.”
