KMD Forecasts Widespread Rainfall Across Kenya on February 16

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning that significant rainfall will affect most regions of the country on Monday, February 16, 2026.

In a daily weather update released on the evening of Sunday, February 15, 2026, meteorologists indicated that morning showers are anticipated in areas such as Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, and the surrounding western counties.

Meanwhile, Nairobi and the Central Highlands can expect cloudy conditions that will transition into sunny intervals, while the North Eastern, North Western, and Coastal regions are likely to remain predominantly sunny.

The Kenya Meteorological Department stated, “Morning rains in parts of Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, and the neighbouring western counties. Cloudy conditions expected to break into sunny intervals in Nairobi and the Central Highlands. Mostly sunny across North Eastern, North Western, and the Coast.”

Afternoon Weather Outlook

In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are expected in several areas of the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, specifically in Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Narok, Nakuru, Kitale, and Eldoret.

Additionally, the Weatherman noted that parts of Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Makindu will likely experience afternoon showers. Meanwhile, regions such as Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and the Coastal area will predominantly enjoy sunny conditions.

The notice elaborated, “Showers and thunderstorms expected in several areas of the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, likely in Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Narok, Nakuru, Kitale, and Eldoret. Afternoon showers anticipated in parts of Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Makindu. Mainly sunny conditions over Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and the Coastal region.”

Long Rains Onset

The Kenya Meteorological Department has previously advised citizens to prepare for the onset of long rains beginning in the second week of March this year.

According to the department, various regions are likely to experience near-average to below-average rainfall, with variability in onset, distribution, and intensity.

In Central Kenya, rainfall is expected to commence in the second or third week of March, affecting counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Furthermore, the report indicates that rainfall in the southeastern lowlands, specifically in the counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, is anticipated to begin between the third and fourth weeks of March.
