The incident, which took place on Thursday, involved the residence of a 70-year-old woman. Preliminary investigations reveal that she placed a sack of charcoal inside the house around 7 PM and left shortly thereafter, returning at approximately 3 AM to discover the structure reduced to ashes.
Law enforcement officials who examined the site confirmed the total destruction caused by the fire, leading to the recovery of two bodies from the debris. The victims were identified as a nine-year-old boy in Grade 3 at Karimboni Comprehensive School and his seven-year-old sister, a Grade 2 pupil at the same institution.
Authorities have documented the scene and are actively investigating the fire’s cause. The homeowner has been taken in by detectives from Magarini for further questioning.
In a separate incident, a family in Kwanza, Trans Nzoia County, is grieving the loss of a one-year-five-month-old child who drowned in an open borehole at Sabwani ‘B’ Village on Thursday.
The child went missing around 9:30 AM, prompting a frantic search by parents and neighbors. Tragically, the body was later found in an uncovered borehole belonging to a neighbor, situated about seven meters from the family home.
The child’s parents reported that he had been in good health prior to his disappearance. Officers from Maili Saba Police Station, along with detectives and Scenes of Crime personnel from Kitale, processed the scene, noting no visible injuries on the body. The remains have been transferred to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem examination. Authorities are urging community members to secure boreholes and water points to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In another heartbreaking event in Ngarengiro, Laikipia County, an 11-year-old girl drowned in the Nanyuki River.
Police recovered her body and transported it to the mortuary for an autopsy while investigations into the circumstances of the drowning continue.
