Businesses and residents in Embakasi are bracing for a day-long power interruption scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025, following a maintenance notice issued by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).
Arcording to the utility firm, electricity supply will be switched off between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to allow engineers to carry out essential maintenance on the power lines serving the area. The planned outage will affect key commercial and residential zones, including CITAM Embakasi, KSD Business Park, Emirates Business Park, Skyline Estate, and the Kenya Airways Pride Centre.
Also listed are Naivas Supermarket Embakasi, wuickmart Supermarket, Cabro Kenya Limited, Kirinyaga Construction Company, KEMSA, and several nearby establishments.
For many traders and business owners, the outage is expected to cause disruptions to daily operations. Supermarkets, workshops, and learning institutions that depend heavily on electricity will be forced to seek alternative sources of power to remain operational.
“We rely on electricity for nearly every activity in the store—from refrigeration to payment systems. Even a few hours of blackout can lead to significant losses,” said a manager at one of the major supermarkets inEmbakasi.
Small business owners such as salon operators, welders, and cyber café attendants have also expressed concern, saying they might have to shut down for the day to avoid extra fuel expenses for generators.
Kenya Power, in a notice issued on Friday evening, apologised for the inconvenience but maintained that the temporary shutdown is part of its broader programme to enhance the reliability and stability of electricity supply in Nairobi.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause. The exercise is necessary to strengthen our network and improve service delivery,” the company said.
The scheduled maintenance comes just two days after a similar nationwide power interruption carried out on Thursday, October 9, 2025, which affected several counties including Nairobi, Machakos, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, and Kiambu.
While the planned outage may inconvenience businesses and households in Embakasi, energy experts have noted that such routine maintenance works are vital in reducing the risk of unexpected blackouts and improving overall service reliability.
Residents and businesses have been advised to plan accordingly and take precautionary measures ahead of the eight-hour power disruption.
