Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing mounting political heat as several prominent figures prepare to challenge him for the county’s top seat in the 2027 general election.
From poor waste management to strained relations with county lawmakers, Sakaja’s leadership has increasingly come under fire, creating an opening for rivals keen to seize control of City Hall.
Mounting Challenges at City Hall
The governor’s administration has been accused of failing to address key issues, including garbage collection, health sector inefficiencies, and stalled infrastructure projects.
Tensions have also emerged between Sakaja and a section of Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs), some of whom are reportedly plotting his impeachment before the next polls.
Despite the turbulence, Sakaja continues to enjoy the support of ODM leader Raila Odinga, who earlier this year publicly endorsed him, saying he trusts the governor to “keep Nairobi stable.”
Moses Kuria Throws His Hat in the Ring
Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria is the latest politician to announce his bid for the Nairobi governorship.
Taking to his X account on Monday, October 13, Kuria said President William Ruto’s vision of a modern, first-world Kenya had inspired him to act.
“Nairobi cannot continue to be the city of filth, garbage, and incompetence. I have heard the cry of its people. That’s why I will run for Governor in 2027—to fix Nairobi,” he wrote.
Kuria’s declaration has injected fresh energy into the city’s political scene and set the stage for an intense contest.
Babu Owino Declares Bid—With or Without ODM
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has also confirmed his intention to vie for governor, saying he will run whether or not his ODM party gives him the ticket.
Speaking on Kameme TV on September 4, the outspoken legislator accused Sakaja of failing to deliver on his promises and insisted he is ready to take the mantle.
“I may not get the ODM ticket, but I’ll still run. I respect Raila Odinga as my political mentor, but my destiny is in God’s hands,” he said.
Tony Gachoka Joins the Race
Political commentator and journalist Tony Gachoka has also entered the race, promising to bring transparency and accountability to the running of the capital.
During his official entry into KANU on June 24, Gachoka unveiled his plan to transform the city through inclusive leadership and proper planning.
“Nairobi needs bold leadership and real solutions. With your support, we will build a city that works for everyone,” he told supporters.
Irungu Nyakera Hints at Joining the Contest
Former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera has also hinted at joining the race after aligning himself with Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP party. Although he is yet to make a formal announcement, sources close to him say consultations are ongoing.
A Fierce Battle Looms
The Nairobi gubernatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the country. With Kuria’s reformist stance, Babu Owino’s youthful vigor, Gachoka’s administrative vision, and Nyakera’s technocratic experience, the 2027 contest promises to be a bruising political showdown.
As City Hall battles allegations of inefficiency and internal wrangles, one thing is clear: Nairobians are hungry for change—and the race to deliver it has just begun.
