On Friday, President William Ruto inaugurated the General Service Unit (GSU) Healthcare Centre located at the Social Health Authority Block in Embakasi, Nairobi.
This state-of-the-art facility aims to enhance healthcare access for officers and their families. The launch took place during the 50th GSU Recruits Passing-Out Parade, an event presided over by the Head of State.
During the ceremony, President Ruto highlighted that the Usalama Cover initiative, managed by the Social Health Authority, now includes over 138,000 police and prison officers along with their eligible dependants under a comprehensive medical scheme.
This coverage ensures access to a wide range of services, including outpatient and inpatient care, surgery, maternity, management of chronic and pre-existing conditions, as well as specialist, dental, optical, and diagnostic services.
“Officers now enjoy the freedom to access eligible services nationwide, no longer confined to a limited network of designated facilities. Digital approvals are processed in under 15 minutes,” stated President Ruto.
The newly established Social Health Authority (SHA) block at the GSU Health Centre will significantly enhance access to care. Additionally, the police service is poised to expand mental health and psychosocial support for officers experiencing trauma.
During a full-dress rehearsal on Tuesday, Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja praised the recruits for their discipline, commitment, and teamwork as they prepared for their passing-out ceremony.
IG Kanja noted the recruits’ impressive growth throughout their training and encouraged them to maintain high standards of discipline, patriotism, and professionalism as they embark on their careers within the National Police Service.
President Ruto was warmly welcomed by Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, Inspector General of Police Mr. Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Mr. Eliud Lagat, along with other senior officers.
