Raila Odinga Jr. has publicly expressed his family’s support for President William Ruto, endorsing the head of state’s development agenda during a visit to Kibra on Tuesday.
While addressing attendees at the Raila Odinga Education Centre, Raila Jr. acknowledged the government’s contributions to educational projects in the Lang’ata constituency. He framed their collaboration as a continuation of his father’s enduring belief in education as a means to escape poverty.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Your Excellency and your government for your support here at the Raila Odinga Centre. Baba believed that education is the lifeline that helps people rise from poverty. As his family, we firmly believe that education remains paramount for all of us,” he stated.
He also welcomed the President back to the community and pledged local support for ongoing initiatives.
“This is what uplifts us, so we say to Your Excellency, thank you very much. We, the people of Kibra, appreciate your presence and encourage you to continue visiting us as you advance development. We are grateful and will support you.”
The Raila Odinga Education Centre, inaugurated in 2016, aims to enhance access to quality education in one of Nairobi’s most densely populated informal settlements. This facility serves thousands of learners, providing a comprehensive learning environment that includes modern classrooms and digital resources.
The centre replaced a school situated near a railway line, with funding sourced from international partners, the Constituency Development Fund, and the Odinga family.
During his visit, Ruto also inspected the Soweto Kibera Affordable Housing Project and toured various institutions, including Ayany Primary School, where he inaugurated a new 10-classroom block.
Raila Jr.’s comments carry significant political implications, especially following the passing of Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025. Before his death, the former Prime Minister had transformed his relationship with Ruto, evolving from a fierce rival to an ally committed to supporting Ruto’s administration at least until 2027.
This alliance has sparked internal divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement. A faction led by Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother and successor, asserts that support should extend beyond 2027, while another faction aligned with Edwin Sifuna opposes this arrangement.
Raila Jr., who has generally maintained a lower political profile compared to his sister Winnie, assumed the role of family head following his father’s burial in Bondo, in accordance with Luo cultural traditions.
