President William Ruto visited former President Uhuru Kenyatta at his Gatundu home on Monday, marking their first public interaction since the 2022 General Elections. The leaders discussed national unity, economic challenges, and development goals. They emphasized collaboration among government, civil society, and other stakeholders to ensure Kenya’s stability.
President Ruto praised Kenyatta for his leadership during the peaceful transition of power and his ongoing commitment to progress. They also supported Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairmanship and called for resolving issues surrounding the IEBC selection panel.
Regionally, they acknowledged Kenya’s role in promoting peace in East Africa. This meeting signals a potential thaw in relations as they work together for Kenya’s betterment.
The meeting by president Ruto and Mr. Kenyatta comes in the wake of the impeachment of deputy president Rigathi Gachagua a few months ago. Rigathi, a strong critic of former president Uhuru Kenyatta was impeached and replaced by professor Kithure Kindiki.
The meeting caused mixed reactions from Kenyans with others claiming that President Ruto is trying to woo the former head of state to back him on his second attempt at the presidency in 2027. Others also felt that the visit was just normal and not linked to the 2027 political matrix.
