Residents in Pipeline Estate are sympathising with a young mother whose son disappeared during devastating floods that swept through parts of Nairobi on March 6. The boy, identified as Rain Taji, reportedly slipped from his mother’s hands as she struggled to escape rising floodwaters that had invaded their neighbourhood.
According to family members, the child’s mother, Naomi Mutinda, was trying to move to safety when strong currents overwhelmed the area. In the chaos of escaping the floods, the young boy was swept away by the rushing water and has not been seen since that night. The heartbreaking incident has left the family and neighbours searching desperately for any information that could help locate him.
A missing person report has already been filed at Kware Police Station as authorities and residents continue efforts to trace the child. Meanwhile, Mutinda is receiving treatment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital where she was admitted after suffering trauma from the ordeal. Relatives say she is still recovering from the shock while hoping for news about her son.
The floods followed hours of heavy rainfall that pounded several parts of the city, causing rivers to burst their banks and water to flow through residential estates. Vehicles, household items and businesses were swept away as residents rushed to safer areas during the night.
Rain Taji’s family is among several families now searching for loved ones who went missing during the disaster. Some residents have spent days visiting hospitals and mortuaries across the city in the hope of finding relatives who disappeared during the flooding.
Other families have already confirmed the deaths of their loved ones and are now struggling with burial preparations. Many say the sudden disaster destroyed businesses and sources of income, making it difficult to raise funds for funerals.
