ODM SG Edwin Sifuna Says He’s Willing to Step Down if Party Leadership Demands

Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has sparked fresh political discourse following his candid remarks during a live interview on Citizen TV, where he expressed readiness to relinquish his post if the party’s leadership no longer has confidence in him.

“If I were asked to step aside as SG of ODM, I would,” said Sifuna. “This position is not mine to cling to. If those who entrusted it to me say they no longer believe I should continue, I would relinquish it without blinking.”

His comments come amid increasing scrutiny of ODM’s recent cooperation with Kenya Kwanza, a move that has unsettled some party loyalists. Critics argue ODM risks losing its watchdog identity, while Sifuna remains defiant — insisting he still believes in the party’s mission and its members.

“I’ve not given up on ODM. I’ve not given up on its members,” Sifuna affirmed. “There’s still trust in Baba’s leadership and the belief that he’ll ultimately do what’s right for Kenyans.”

He made it clear that if ever he feels the party has strayed beyond recovery, he will step down voluntarily. “When that day comes, I will say so publicly — that I’ve lost the battle to restore ODM.”

On recent speculation about forming a new party alongside Raila Odinga, Sifuna dismissed the idea entirely, saying he would rather remain “a small fish in a big pond” than seek status in a lesser outfit like the Green Thinking Action Party.

Addressing ODM’s prospects for the 2027 presidential race, Edwin Sifuna was confident: “ODM has not run out of leaders or presidential candidates. The task ahead requires clarity, not sentiment.”

He added that the opposition must stay focused on challenging President William Ruto’s administration, stating: “The project of removing William Ruto does not allow for angels. Even Sifuna is not an angel.”

On the possibility of collaborating with former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Sifuna acknowledged the complexities of Matiang’i’s legacy but said he wouldn’t dismiss him outright: “If Matiang’i can help us defeat Ruto, then so be it.”

As ODM gears up for its National Delegates Convention (NDC) in October 2025 — a pivotal event that will determine the party’s leadership heading into the 2027 elections — Sifuna’s remarks are likely to fuel internal debate and shape the conversation around party loyalty, structure, and future strategy.
