Nairobi United skipper John Otieno has expressed optimism in the team’s capability to stun record KPL champions, Gor Mahia, in Sunday, December 21, 2025, FKF Premier League clash.
Speaking on Saturday, December 20, Otieno stated that they will be looking to build on their previous victory to spur them past the Charles Akonnor team, currently ranked second with 23 points.
The clash sets Naibois on a collision path against a bruised opponent whom they pipped to the CAF Confederations Cup in August to carry the honours of representing the nation in the inter-CAF clubs tournament.
Tough opponent
The top league debutants beat Gor Mahia 2-1 to clinch the FKF Shield trophy in what was a remarkable year, during which they also earned promotion to top-flight football.
“We have been in a tough race both in the Confederation Games and the league fronts. We have not had the best of runs in the league, but tomorrow it’s a big task against a tough opponent,” he said.
“We are hopeful and positive heading into the tie against Gor Mahia. We are coming from a win. It will be a tough game, but we are ready for it. The game will be decided after ninety minutes. We are very positive we will come out with the maximum points,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gor heads into the clash after edging Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1 to snap a spate of three winless matches.
On his part, coach Nicholas Muyoti has disclosed their readiness for the clash and the prospect of a highly contested duel between two teams boasting huge fanbases.
According to the coach, his charges are at the proper psychological and confidence level for the tie.
“Our confidence is now back after the draw against Murang’a Seal and the win against Tusker, and they will be up to the task tomorrow. It will be a good derby, our fans will also be here, and they know Gor Mahia with its fanbase, so it will probably be the second derby after that one pitting Gor against Leopards,” he added.
The clash at the Dandora Stadium will kick off at 4:00 pm.
