Mystery over death of student

The family of a Form Two student at Miangeni International School is in mourning following his tragic death under unclear circumstances.

The body of the student was reportedly found in the school’s swimming according to the school records. The family however refutes this and claims he passed away due to head injuries caused by a blunt object.

The body of the late Martin Mugambi was discovered on Monday 10th February 2025 in the swimming pool. Martin’s family is seeking answers regarding the incident.

Harun Mwangi, uncle to the late Martin, exclaimed: “We do not want anyone to speak, save for the body. We want the doctor to conduct a postmortem so that we can know what led to the death of our son,”

He there after explained, ” This is because if you check the body, he appears to have been hit with a metal on the head with blood clogged all over his face, they then threw him into the water.”

As the family held demonstrations, they demanded to know why a government pathologist had not been sent to conduct an autopsy on the body more than a week after he died.

The late Martin’s brother explained that it was a tough decision for them to accept the death of their kin under the mysterious circumstances.

The brother added, “My brother was bringing home and here I am coming to collect his body from the morgue. I cannot understand,”

Claims by the family were however refuted by the school. The school accused the family of failing to visit their son in school during the school’s fun day a weekend before his death.

The school management claims that the student may have been facing mental health related problems which may have been further escalated by the family’s failure to visit him during the fun day.

”It took an extra effort for a phone call to be made for the student to be sent money. This was for his shopping. He was sent Ksh900 which was not enough. His brother sent an additional Ksh300 that did little to solve the situation.” Gerald Ndege, the Deputy Principal, disclosed.

The school further stated that they had bought the late Mugambi snacks as well as his fellow students. The management disclosed that some students had come forward revealing that Mugambi had expressed thoughts of suicide.

His body was later moved to the Makindu Sub-County morgue, where tensions ran high as the family arrived, demanding answers about their loved one’s death.

The matter was taken over by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI), who recorded statements from the school, parents, and the students as investigations continued.
