Manchester United added pain to Chelsea by beating the North Londoners 2-1 after midweek lose to Bayern Munich in Alianz Arena.
The game started with incidents when Chelsea goalkeeper was red carded after just five minutes into the game— when he fauled Bryan Mbuemo when the Cameroonian had a glaring chance to put hosts in front. Enzo Maresca was forced to effect a total of three changes in the first half, in order to adjust to the game as they were now numerically disadvantaged. The changes saw Chelsea’s marksman Cole Palmer subbed off in the first half.
In the 14th minute of the game. United pulled the first blood when captain Bruno Fernandez scored, dampening the spirits of the London visitors. Brazilian talisman Casemiro pulled another one when he nodded home a cross from Patrick Dorgu in the 37th minute to strengthen Man United’s lead going to the half time break.
However, just before the half time break, United’s second goal scorer, Casemiro, got a second booking of the game, making him be the second player in the same game to be sent away. The second red card brought back numerical parity in the second half.
Chelsea pulled one through defender Trevoh Chalobah’s header in the 120th minute. United were forced to absorb a lot of pressure after Chelsea’s goal, but their resolute defence fended off attacks from Chelsea forwards.
This was the first time Man United have registered a back to back wins at Old Trafford under the stewardship of the Portuguese tactician Ruben Amorim.
United have had their worst start of a season in recent history, registering only two wins after five matches.
Yesterday’s win catapulted the Carrington club to position ten with meagre seven points, while Chelsea dropped to position six with 8 points after identical number of games.
