Road users are encouraged to exercise caution following a mudslide that has blocked a section of the Iten–Kabarnet Road due to heavy rainfall affecting the country.
In a traffic advisory released on April 29, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) reported that the incident occurred near Kolol, restricting access along that stretch of road.
“Due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, a landslide has occurred along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol, blocking the affected section,” the authority stated.
KeNHA cautioned that this situation could pose safety risks and urged road users to remain vigilant. “Motorists are advised to exercise caution and strictly follow instructions from police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety,” the statement emphasized.
The authority confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed, while expressing gratitude for public cooperation “as it works to ensure the safety of all road users.”
This incident occurs during a period of persistent rainfall that has affected many areas, particularly during the night and early morning hours.
Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department alerted the public to expect intensified rains and strong winds from April 24 to May 1, 2026. Acting Director Edward Muriuki indicated that rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is likely across extensive regions of the country.
The forecast identified several high-risk areas, including the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of Northwestern, Northeastern, and Southeastern Kenya.
Counties such as Baringo, where the affected road is situated, were specifically noted as areas likely to experience significant rainfall.
The ongoing downpours have raised concerns about potential disruptions, including flooding, poor visibility, and infrastructure damage.
Authorities are actively monitoring weather patterns and road conditions as the rainy season continues.
