King Mohammed VI Backs Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has expressed strong support for Saudi Arabia amidst renewed attacks from Yemen’s Houthi movement. He emphasized that any assault on Saudi territory is an assault on Morocco.

In messages to Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Mohammed VI, recognized as Africa’s wealthiest monarch, condemned the attacks on civilian areas, economic facilities, and critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. He reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to the security, sovereignty, and stability of the kingdom.

“An attack on Saudi Arabia is an attack on Morocco,” he stated, highlighting that standing with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states aligns with our shared strategic interests.

King Mohammed VI also denounced attempts to target Makkah and Madinah, noting that such actions impact the sentiments of over 1.8 billion Muslims globally.

“In this delicate time your country faces, it is our historical duty, guided by religious values and strategic considerations, to unite in defense of our rights, sovereignty, security, and the holy sites of the Muslim community,” he remarked.

He further condemned the “criminal acts” of the Houthis and those who support them, holding them accountable for the violence.

The king emphasized that the security and stability of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council states are intrinsically linked to Morocco’s own security.

His comments carry significant economic weight, as instability around the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab threatens major trade routes connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Prolonged insecurity could raise shipping, insurance, and logistics costs.

King Mohammed VI warned that ongoing attacks jeopardize not only regional security but also vital maritime corridors essential to the global economy and international navigation.

He pointed out that these attacks violate international law, referring to UN Security Council Resolutions 2216 and 2722.

Moreover, he asserted that assaults on civilian areas, economic facilities, and holy sites breach international humanitarian law and called for accountability.

With extensive business interests through royal family holdings, particularly the investment group Al Mada, involved in various sectors across Africa, King Mohammed VI has solidified Morocco’s strategic relationship with Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf region, especially during times of rising regional tensions concerning security, trade, and crucial maritime routes.
