Kiambaa Member of Parliament (MP) John Njuguna Kawanjiku has accused the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Rigathi Gachagua, of participating in political witch-hunts and fostering divisive politics within the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking on Monday, November 3, 2025, Kawanjiku rejected Gachagua’s attempts to unify the region under his leadership, asserting that Gachagua was employing coercion and intimidation instead of engaging in dialogue and showing respect to establish political dominance in anticipation of the 2027 General Election.
“Whatever you are, that is a non-issue to me. The politics of 2027 will shape itself, and when that particular time comes, we will definitely decide where we are going to go and who we are going to vote for as our president, or probably where we will be able to take our vote,” he stated.
Moreover, he stressed that leaders from Mt. Kenya should prioritize unity founded on mutual respect, rather than fear or manipulation.
I informed him, ‘If your intention is to unite people, ensure that everyone is included, particularly Uhuru. He deserves the respect that is due to him. However, I will not engage in the act of taking Mama Ngina’s mbuzi,’ he remarked.
Gachagua’s comments
This statement follows Gachagua’s criticism from the previous day, where he expressed that the current leaders in the Mt Kenya region do not possess the capability to execute their responsibilities, while also recognizing that Raila had provided a platform for brilliant minds within the ODM party.
While addressing the Ngemi Cia Watho Association Festival in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, on the evening of Saturday, November 1, 2025, Gachagua emphasized the significant role that lawyers played in protecting the legacy of the late former prime minister.
Most significantly, though, every member of his political party and every lawmaker is an excellent lawyer. For thirty years, Raila has been protected by these individuals, Gachagua clarified.
He went ahead to even say, “Look at minds like James Orengo, Otieno Kajwang, Caroli Omondi, Peter Kaluma, Edwin Sifuna, Sterward Madzavyo, Millie Odhiambo, Tom Ojienda, Mohammed Faki, and Babu Owino are all members of Raila’s team. Then came Nyinyi Mnanipitia Wamatinga, Wamakeki, and great minds. He continued, “My people, your leader is in trouble; he has no foot soldiers.”
Gachagua begged the people of Mount Kenya to adopt Raila’s approach and elect more than forty attorneys before the 2027 elections. Gachagua said, “I am asking you to give me forty lawyers.”. Gachagua criticized a tendency where the majority of the region’s elites merely cast ballots before departing, leaving the area vulnerable to manipulation. In a long speech, the former DP urged the educated residents of the Mount Kenya region to assume leadership roles.
