A Kenyan family residing in Waterloo, Iowa, is grappling with the profound loss of three siblings who tragically died in a road accident in Kenya during what was intended to be a joyous family holiday.
The catastrophic incident occurred on January 4, 2026, in Naivasha along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, abruptly ending the lives of Emmanuel DeLeon, 13, Kairu Winkelpleck, 6, and their elder sister, Njeri DeLeon, 16. The children were in Kenya with their parents when the accident took place.
Emmanuel and Kairu died instantly at the scene, while Njeri suffered severe injuries and was swiftly transported to a Nairobi hospital, where she entered a medically induced coma. Despite the dedicated efforts of medical professionals, Njeri succumbed to her injuries on the evening of January 9, just days after the crash.
These three children are the beloved offspring of Wangui Ndirangu, who previously lived in New Jersey and now calls Iowa home. They are also the niece and nephews of Kairu Ndirangu, Wamuyu, Njeri, and Daisy Kariuki, and the grandchildren of the late Charity Ndirangu and Jim Ndirangu.
The tragic loss has reverberated through both the Kenyan and American communities that are connected to the family.
Family Remains in Kenya
The parents, who survived the accident with minor injuries, have chosen to stay in Kenya to finalize funeral arrangements. Daily meetings are being held at the International Christian Church Centre on Mombasa Road in Nairobi from 5 PM to 7 PM.
A memorial service honoring all three children will take place at the International Christian Centre in Nairobi on Friday, January 23, starting at 10:00 AM. This will be followed by a funeral service at Kariokor Crematorium on Saturday, January 24, commencing at 7 AM.
These tragic deaths have reignited concerns regarding road safety in Kenya, particularly on major highways, where fatal accidents persist despite ongoing safety initiatives.
Recent police reports indicate that over 290 individuals lost their lives in road accidents during the first 21 days of January 2026. On January 21, seven additional fatalities occurred in separate incidents, raising the total to 294 for the month. This includes two pedestrians, two passengers, two riders, and one pillion passenger, marking an increase of 18 deaths compared to the same period in 2025.
Young Lives Cut Short
Emmanuel DeLeon, a 13-year-old eighth grader at Hoover Middle School in Waterloo, was known for his infectious cheerfulness that left a lasting impression on classmates and teachers.
“Emmanuel consistently radiated positivity and brightened everyone’s day,” remarked Amanda Anderson-Murty.
A family friend, Ciara Oder, fondly remembered his joyful spirit, stating he was “always happy and full of laughter.”
Kairu Winkelpleck, just six years old, attended first grade at Royal Legacy Christian Academy. Friends and family described him as vibrant and deeply cherished by those who knew him.
Their elder sister, Njeri DeLeon, was 16 and a junior at West High School. She had recently joined the school’s cheerleading team, making her debut in August 2025 at the UNI-Dome. Initially apprehensive, she quickly embraced the sport, earning the admiration of her teammates for her dedication and enthusiasm.
Former teacher Glenda Griffin described Njeri as “sweet, caring, and kindhearted,” highlighting her “most beautiful smile.”
