Kenya is mourning the loss of a trailblazing leader and dedicated advocate for women’s empowerment, Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo. Her family announced that she peacefully passed away in her sleep while in North Carolina, United States.
In a heartfelt message, the Asiyo family expressed their grief, saying, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the departure of our beloved mother, Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo. Her love, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the cause of women will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
Hon. Dr. Asiyo’s legacy is marked by her fearless advocacy for women’s rights and her historic election as Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo in 1982—making her one of the few women to serve in Parliament at that time. Her pioneering spirit and dedication to gender equality continue to inspire generations across Kenya.
It was during her stint in parliament that she pushed for major reforms for the inclusion of women in the country’s politics and leadership. Through her initiative, the Affirmative Action Fund, which disbursed 1,000,000 to women contesting for political seats, was established.
She tabled this motion in 1997 in the seventh parliament while serving as the member of parliament.
