Kenya High Commission in Maputo has issued a public advisory that urges Kenyans to observe Mozambican immigration regulations, especially concerning the permitted duration of stay in the Southern African country.
In a notice released on October 1, 2025, the Mission reminded all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique—including those using Portuguese visas—to ensure they strictly comply with immigration timelines to avoid fines, inconveniences, or other sanctions.
“The High Commission therefore urges all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique to strictly comply with the permitted duration of stay to avoid inconveniences, fines, or other sanctions,” read part of the statement.
According to the advisory, the Commission has noted with concern the rising number of Kenyans going beyond their approved periods in Mozambique, an act that goes against the 2018 Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports between thetwo countries.
“The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has observed an increase in cases of Kenyan nationals overstaying in Mozambique, contrary to the Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports between the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Mozambique,” stated the public notice shared on X on October 6, 2025.
The Mission cautioned that those who overstay risk facing enforcement measures by Mozambican authorities, underscoring the importance of monitoring travel periods and planning returns in good time.
Visa-Free Entry Rules
Under the bilateral agreement, between Kenya and Mozambique, Kenyan citizens with valid ordinary passports or equivalent travel documents—bearing at least six months’ validity—are allowed to enter Mozambique without a visa for up to 90 days. The visit, however, must align with the purposes covered under a visitor’s permit, such as tourism, family visits, or short-term business activities.
Any stay beyond the 90-day limit constitutes a breach of Mozambican immigration law and may attract fines or legal repucassions.
“Please note that exceeding the authorised 90-day period amounts to a violation of Mozambican immigration laws and attracts penalties, including possible legal repercussions,” the notice added.
The High Commission urged Kenyan travellers to remain vigilant and to always respect host country laws, noting that responsible travel safeguards both personal welfare and the reputation of Kenya abroad.
