Jubilee Director of Elections Hon Kanini Kega, during last elections’ campaign season.

Former Kieni Member of Parliament Hon Kanini Kega found his was back to Parliament. Hon. Kega is the Jubilee Party’s Director of Elections.

The Azimio die hard was among the nine Kenyans who were approved by the Kenyan Parliament to represent the country in (EALA) East African Legislative Assembly.

Kanini Kega, (his real name James Mathenge) sailed through among other notable names like Winnie Odinga (Azimio coalition presidential flag bearer’s daughter), Kennedy Musyoka (Kalonzo Musyoka’s son), Omar Hassan (former Mombasa Senator, and last election’s gubernatorial candidate in the county), David Sankok (former nominated Jubilee Member Parliament) among others.

Kanini Kega was a two-term Kieni constituency legislator, who braved the United Democratic Alliance’s (UDA) wave in Central Kenya. However, his forays didn’t bear much fruit as he was defeated by the current member.

Among the nine leaders that were elected to represent Kenya, four were from the larger Azimio coalition political party, while five were from the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition government.

The former Kieni legislator thanked all members who were behind his election to the EALA. He however had a one liner for the Almighty God, ‘There is God in heaven’. It was also interesting to note that in his congratulatory message to members who voted for him, Kanini Kega particularly praised the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, terming him as the ‘Mt Kenya kingpin’.

It is rumoured the Deputy President had mobilised the Central Kenya members – who are largely UDA-allied – to really behind Kanini Kega.

The legislator, alongside former Murang’a Women Rep Sabina Chege, got admiration from Azimio coalition fraternity before the last general election after they chose to go against the tide in Central Kenya, and stood with Raila Odinga to the end. Sabina has since been nominated to Kenya’s National Assembly through the Jubilee Party.
