Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto, accusing him of presiding over what he termed as “a money laundering hub” in Kenya.
Speaking during the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) National Delegates Conference at Ufungamano House, Nairobi, Kalonzo said Ruto’s administration had allowed the rot of economic crime to thrive under the watch of international actors.
His remarks came barely a day after President Ruto addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he, alongside California Governor Gavin Newsom, witnessed the signing of the California–Africa Climate and Economic Partnership. The deal, which centers on renewable energy, electric mobility, climate-smart agriculture, and digital innovation, positions Kenya as the first African nation to ink such an MoU with the world’s fourth-largest economy.
However, when speaking in the company of a host of other opposition leaders, the Wiper leader dismissed the President’s international charm offensive as a cover-up.
“William Ruto has turned Kenya into a hub for money laundering, forcing the international community to grey-list our nation. And now at the United Nations, we see him attempting reputation laundering — speaking about conflicts in Sudan while conveniently ignoring the fact that his government has openly backed RSF and that Kenyan arms have been traced in that brutal war. Kenyans are watching. The world is watching,” Kalonzo charged.
The former Vice President also reiterated his earlier vow to “pay any price to stop Ruto’s second term victory”, framing himself as part of a united opposition determined to block what he described as Kenya’s “descent into state capture and economic criminality.”
Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027
Kalonzo further praised People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, who formally declared her 2027 presidential bid at the same forum. He described her as a “courageous and principled leader” and pledged to work closely with her under the opposition coalition banner.
“As the United Opposition, we will continue to stand together. We are the Government-in-Waiting, ready to rescue our country from a regime that has betrayed its people. Together, we will restore integrity at home, rebuild Kenya’s name abroad, and deliver the leadership our people deserve,” Kalonzo said.
The bitter exchange between President William Ruto against opposition leaders underscores the growing political tension as the opposition sharpens its attacks on President Ruto’s international diplomacy while laying ground for an anti-Ruto coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
