The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that Kenya’s next General Election will take place on Tuesday, August 10, 2027. This announcement came from Commissioner Ann Nderitu, Chairperson of the Election Operations Committee, during the unveiling of the Election Operations Plan (EOP) for 2025–2027.
The EOP acts as a strategic framework for managing the upcoming election, aligning with the IEBC’s Strategic Plan for 2024–2029. This plan offers a clear roadmap for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring essential electoral activities to ensure a successful election.
Nderitu emphasized that the plan aims to ensure timely execution of crucial electoral tasks, promote transparency, enhance compliance with electoral laws, engage stakeholders and citizens, and strengthen institutional resilience.
Key timelines include the requirement for public officers aiming for elective positions to resign six months before the election by February 9, 2027. Political parties must submit their membership lists by March 16, 2027, along with details of their party primaries, including candidate names, dates, and venues.
Additionally, political parties must conduct primaries and resolve any internal disputes by May 9, 2027. Independent candidates must not belong to any registered political party by this date and must submit their names and intended symbols by the same deadline.
The nomination period for all candidates runs from May 29, 2027, to June 11, 2027. Candidates must personally deliver their nomination papers to the IEBC Chairperson at designated locations, within specified hours.
The commission will address nomination disputes within 10 days of filing, with a final deadline for disputes set for June 12, 2027.
Nderitu also announced that the official campaign period will run from Saturday, May 29, 2027, to Saturday, August 7, 2027—48 hours before the election.
This Election Operations Plan will serve as a vital guide for all preparations leading up to the 2027 General Election, ensuring a smooth electoral process.
