Governor Kahiga Resigns as CoG Vice Chair After Incendiary Remarks on Luos

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down as Deputy Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following public uproar over remarks he made regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The controversy stems from comments captured on video during a funeral in Nyeri on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, where Governor Kahiga, speaking in Kikuyu, seemed to suggest that Raila’s death was an opportunity for the Central region to regain development focus.

In the widely shared clip, Kahiga told mourners that “God had intervened,” implying that the late ODM leader had been a stumbling block to the region’s progress. His words quickly sparked outrage across the country, with leaders and citizens alike condemning them as insensitive and disrespectful. Under growing pressure, Kahiga tendered his resignation on Wednesday morning, October 22, 2025, and publicly sought forgiveness from Raila Odinga’s family.

Kahiga issues apology

Addressing the press in Nyeri, Kahiga expressed deep remorse and clarified the intent behind his controversial remarks.
“I wish to extend my sincere apologies to our grieving nation and particularly to Mama Ida Odinga, her children Rosemary, Junior and Winnie, Senator Oburu Odinga, MP Ruth Odinga, the extended family, the ODM fraternity, the Luo community, and all Kenyans,” he said.

The governor maintained that his words were taken out of context.
“The clip was recorded during a burial in my home village, and my message was not meant to celebrate anyone’s death. My point was that the current system of government has reflected uneven development across regions. I only meant that moments like these call for reflection and unity,” he added.

Resignation and accountability

Kahiga went on to clarify that the sentiments he expressed were his personal opinions and did not represent the views of the CoG, his political allies, or the people of Nyeri.
“Given the public concern my remarks have raised, I take full responsibility for both the real and perceived implications of my words. Consequently, I have chosen to step aside from my role as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors with immediate effect,” he stated.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) swiftly condemned Kahiga’s statements, terming them “reckless and unbecoming of a public official.” The party urged leaders to exercise sensitivity and respect during a period of national mourning.
