The Kenyan government has announced a significant Ksh. 28 billion modernization initiative aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and welfare of the National Police Service (NPS).
This comprehensive program will involve the acquisition of 3,000 vehicles, including state-of-the-art protective gear and armored vehicles, over the next two years.
During an interdenominational prayer service at the National Police College, Embakasi A Campus, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that 1,000 vehicles are expected to be delivered in the coming months, with the remaining units scheduled to arrive subsequently.
CS Murkomen also addressed the issue of cyber-related crimes, emphasizing that the Penal Code clearly outlines the consequences for those who threaten others, regardless of whether their actions occur online. “If criminals have moved online, it doesn’t mean they are immune from the law,” he stated.
Acknowledging the mental health challenges faced by police officers, Murkomen pledged support for initiatives aimed at destigmatizing issues such as attempted suicide and promoting a culture of care within the service.
Principal Secretary for Internal Security, Dr. Raymond Omollo, called on the public to recognize and appreciate the critical role played by police officers in maintaining safety and stability in the community.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja expressed his gratitude for the sacrifices made by officers and underscored their unwavering dedication to public service. This modernization effort represents a crucial step towards improving the capabilities and well-being of the men and women in uniform.
