Gor Mahia’s vice-captain, Mike Kibwage, emphasizes the importance of focus and discipline as the Kenyan champions gear up to face Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round at Nyayo Stadium this Sunday.
This match arrives at a challenging moment for K’Ogalo, who are grappling with an increasing injury list, including newly appointed captain Sylvester Owino. The central defender has sustained a severe right calf sprain, sidelining him for approximately two months.
Owino’s absence elevates Kibwage’s leadership role, prompting him to take charge on the pitch.
“We possess a strong squad capable of dominating, and we are confident that our rhythm will return soon. We assure our supporters that brighter days are ahead,” Kibwage affirmed.
He encourages his teammates to move past recent setbacks, such as the 3-1 defeat to Tusker in the FKF Super Cup, and to channel their energy into this continental challenge.
Coach Charles Akonnor acknowledges that the injury situation complicates preparations and limits his selection options ahead of the match.
“The injuries present challenges within the squad, making the selection process more complex,” Akonnor noted.
Gor can draw motivation from their recent CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign in Rwanda, where they reached the final before facing defeat against Sudanese side Al-Hilal. This tournament allowed Akonnor to evaluate various combinations and enhance the players’ cohesion.
For Kibwage, this experience has not only strengthened the bond within the squad but also imparted valuable lessons that will benefit them against Pyramids.
