In observance of Nelson Mandela International Day, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Kenya, together with partners including The Chandaria Foundation, KCB Foundation, Global Peace Women, Imarisha Ulimwengu Initiative, and the President’s Fellows, gathered at Kamiti Youth Correctional and Training Centre on 18th July 2025 to honor Mandela’s legacy under the theme: “Uniting to Combat Poverty and Inequality.”
This year’s Mandela Day was marked by more than symbolic gestures — it was a rallying call for action, emphasizing Mandela’s enduring messages of reconciliation, dignity, and second chances. The event aimed to inspire hope, restore dignity, and promote transformation among young people in conflict with the law.
As part of the celebrations, over 650 trees were planted within the prison grounds, symbolizing renewal and environmental responsibility. The visitors also engaged with 97 young inmates, offering mentorship, support, and encouragement, with the goal of helping them see beyond their past and envision a positive future.
GPF Kenya and its partners reaffirmed their dedication to peacebuilding, moral leadership, and youth empowerment. The interaction was more than a visit; it was an opportunity to remind these young individuals that their past does not determine their future. They were provided with life skills, mentorship, and tools to become agents of peace and change in their communities.
The young inmates showcased their talents through drama, music, and dance performances, highlighting themes of humane treatment, rehabilitation, and the transformative power of the arts. These creative expressions served as a powerful reminder that hope and potential can flourish even within prison walls.
The Mandela International Day event was attended by notable dignitaries and stakeholders committed to the mission of transforming lives at Kamiti Centre, including: SP. Paul Kaburu, Officer in Charge, Kamiti Youth Correctional and Training Centre, SSP. Jackline Onyango, Officer in Charge, Kamae Girls Boston Institution, Mr. Vincent Rapando, Chandaria Foundation, Mr. Teddy Oracha, KCB Foundation, Ms. Caroline, Global Peace Women, Ms. Lydia, Imarisha Ulimwengu Initiative, Mr. Francis Kibathi, Pendekezo Letu, President Fellows, amongst other key stakeholders.

Special thanks were extended to the KCB Foundation for their generous donation of over 1,500 trees, to Imarisha Ulimwengu Initiative for supporting transportation and toiletries for the youth, and to Global Peace Women for their contribution of toiletries for the juveniles.
At GPF Kenya, the commitment to peace and hope remains unwavering. They believe every child, regardless of their past, deserves a future filled with possibilities, and promised to continue working behind prison walls to nurture that hope.
