Former Bonchari MP Zebedeo Opore is dead

Former Bonchari Member of Parliament Zebedeo John Opore has passed away. His death was confirmed on October 18, 2024.

Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri confirmed his death on Friday, October 18, and paid tribute to the late lawmaker, describing him as a champion who treated both young and old with respect.

Okenyuri highlighted Opore’s unwavering dedication to his constituents, noting that he consistently advocated for their welfare during his time in office.

“It is with great sorrow that I learned of the passing of Zebedeo John Opore, the former MP for Bonchari Constituency. Throughout his remarkable political career, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the people he represented, fighting for their interests in and out of Parliament. His deep respect for all generations made him a true champion for Bonchari, and his death marks the loss of a voice of reason in Kenya,” she said.

Opore was first elected as MP for Bonchari in 1997 and returned to the position in 2013 following a by-election, running on a Ford People party ticket after the Court of Appeal nullified John Oyioka’s election.

He ran again in the 2021 Bonchari by-election under the Jubilee Party but was defeated by Pavel Robert Oimeke, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate.

Opore’s passing comes nearly three years after the death of his wife, Mama Angelina Opore, in November 2021. His death follows the passing of another political figure, former Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Beatrice Nkatha, who died on Thursday, October 17, at Kiirua Mission Hospital in Meru after a long illness. The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) remembered Nkatha as a visionary leader and devoted public servant.
