Former President Jimmy Carter, the only Georgian to ever occupy the White House, died on Sunday, December 29, 2024, after spending over a year in hospice care.
US President Joe Biden has eulogised Carter saying America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. “Over six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.”
Carter was 100 years old, making him the longest-lived president in American history. Carter passed away at his home in Plains, surrounded by family, according to the Carter Center.
“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “We thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”
Public services are planned for Atlanta and Washington, followed by a private burial service in Plains. A complete schedule has yet to be released.
Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter were cherished residents of Plains, the small town in southwest Georgia where they grew up. Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96.
During his presidency from 1977 to 1981, Carter faced significant challenges, including a struggling economy and the Iranian hostage crisis. However, his popularity soared after leaving office as he became the face of Habitat for Humanity and tackled global issues through his Atlanta-based Carter Center.
In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his relentless efforts in promoting peace, democracy, and human rights. He was also a prolific author and a three-time Grammy winner for his audiobooks.
The Carters returned to their hometown after leaving the White House, living in the same modest ranch-style home they purchased in 1961. A devout Christian, Carter famously taught Sunday School at Maranatha Baptist Church until 2020.
Carter entered hospice care in February 2023, leading to an outpouring of tributes from Georgians across the political spectrum. Despite health challenges, he remained an influential figure in politics, endorsing candidates like Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator Raphael Warnock.
Carter’s legacy as a champion for peace and humanitarian efforts will be remembered fondly by many.
