Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has addressed growing speculation regarding his absence from key national and public events, asserting that his recent time away is simply due to a brief holiday rather than any fallout with President William Ruto.
Since the end of last year, Kindiki has been noticeably absent from several high-profile events, including President Ruto’s New Year’s Eve address and dinner at the Kisii State Lodge, as well as the Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Siaya County. His absence raised eyebrows, particularly as these events were attended by prominent figures such as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The Deputy President also missed occasions where President Ruto hosted Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, and outgoing African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki at his Kilgoris home—events that were also attended by Raila. His absence at the funeral of Mama Anne Nanyama, the mother of Speaker Moses Wetangula, further fueled rumors of a rift between him and Ruto.
Critics have drawn parallels between Kindiki’s absence and the early signs of tension that preceded the split between Ruto and impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. However, Kindiki made his first public appearance of the year on Saturday, clarifying that he had simply taken a short break from his official duties during the festive season.
“I have just a few hours left of my holiday and want to enjoy this time without distractions,” he said at the wedding of Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano’s son in Tigoni, Kiambu County. “Let’s not get caught up in trivial matters.”
Despite the swirling rumors, Kindiki expressed optimism for the coming year, reaffirming his strong support for President Ruto and thanking him for the opportunity to take leave. “I believe this is the year for all of us to rally behind the President and help elevate Kenya to new heights,” he added.
