Daystar University has revoked the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between herself and the Embassy of the State of Israel in Kenya, on December 16, 2024.
Announcing the revocation of the MOU this morning, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban P. Ayiro, stated: “We are not in any way supporting the ongoing humanitarian conflict in the Middle East. Daystar University esteems the sanctity of life and advocates for the peaceful co-existence of humanity.”
Initially, the memorandum aimed to enhance the university’s green spaces by planting 5,000 Biblical species of trees at its Athi River Main Campus. Prof. Ayiro had described the project as a symbol of friendship and collaboration between Israel and Kenya, underscoring both nations’ commitment to environmental sustainability and educational advancement.
However, following the announcement, a wave of criticism erupted on social media, with many Kenyans, including former students, launching a petition to revoke the agreement. Activist Al Amin Kimathi expressed his dismay, commenting, “Prof. Laban Ayiro, what a way to ruin an illustrious into disgrace?” Another user, @JarelTheArtist, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “I just signed a petition to stop Daystar University’s MOU with the Embassy of Israel in Kenya. Palestinians are as human as we are!”
The backlash prompted the university to take swift action, with Prof. Ayiro’s social media post announcing the agreement being removed, though the Israeli Embassy’s tweet regarding the partnership remains live.
As tensions continue in the Middle East, Daystar University’s decision reflects a growing sensitivity to global humanitarian issues and the importance of community response in the face of such crises.
