Commuters decry traffic snarl-up on Nairobi-Nakuru highway

Motorists and passengers traveling to Western Kenya faced severe delays on Friday due to a massive traffic jam along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The gridlock began in the early hours as many commuters headed upcountry for the festive season, leading to a backlog of vehicles stretching over 50 kilometers by noon.

The situation was further exacerbated by heavy rains that fell on Thursday night, causing landslides on the Kamandura-Maa Mahiu road and prompting more drivers to use the already congested Nairobi-Nakuru highway. Additional traffic jams were reported on the Rironi-Maa Mahiu road, complicating the situation further.

St. John Ambulance Kenya alerted motorists about heavy congestion between Kimende and the Flyover, urging them to avoid these areas if possible. The increase in vehicles during the holiday season is typical, as many Kenyans travel to their rural homes for Christmas.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized the importance of road safety during this busy period, urging all drivers, especially public service vehicle operators, to adhere to traffic regulations. To enhance road safety, the government plans to increase highway patrols and enforce vehicle roadworthiness checks.

Mudavadi reiterated the goal of reducing road traffic fatalities by five percent before 2028, calling on all officers to actively monitor compliance with road safety regulations.
