Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino emphasized that the opposition must unite to prevent President William Ruto from securing a decisive victory in the upcoming 2027 elections. During an interview on Herman Manyora’s podcast on April 12, 2026, Owino argued that unity is essential for the opposition to mount a successful challenge against Ruto.
He urged the leaders within the united opposition to prioritize collective goals over individual ambitions, stating that each member should be willing to set aside personal aspirations to strengthen their chances of victory. Owino warned that if opposition members run as independents, they risk fragmenting the vote, which would allow Ruto to win easily.
“If the opposition stands united, they can ensure Ruto does not remain in power. A united front will guarantee their success,” he asserted.
This call for unity comes as the united opposition leaders have expressed their commitment to rally behind a single candidate when the time is right, aiming to present a strong challenge to Ruto.
Babu Owino is part of the Linda Mwananchi coalition, which seeks collaboration with the united opposition to fulfill their shared goal of making Ruto a one-term president. Edwin Sifuna, the coalition’s leader, has openly supported this collaboration, highlighting the necessity of a unified approach to defeat Ruto. He stressed that overcoming the current administration requires a significant collective effort from Kenyans and urged opposition leaders to avoid the pitfalls of vote-splitting that have hindered past efforts.
Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi echoed Sifuna’s sentiments, suggesting that while discussions about a formal alliance may be premature, the two groups will eventually unite to strategize for their common objective. Siaya Governor James Orengo, also part of the Linda Mwananchi team, reinforced this message of unity.
In response, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, leading the united opposition, has reached out to the Linda Mwananchi team, indicating a willingness to support a strong candidate from their coalition. Gachagua expressed readiness to set aside personal ambitions in favor of a collaborative effort to challenge the current government.
