A Voice Silenced: Mr. Festus Amimo, Head of Mayienga FM is Dead

In a loss shrouded in sudden mystery and profound sorrow, the untimely death of Mayienga FM’s esteemed Head, Festus Amimo Wa, has plunged the media fraternity and the nation into mourning. The station’s announcement, made with “profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts,” has been followed by an unsettling police report indicating the beloved broadcaster, popularly known as Wuod Awasi, was found deceased next to his car in Nairobi under unclear circumstances.

Preliminary, unconfirmed reports from law enforcement sources state that Amimo was discovered after apparently collapsing in a public area. His body was subsequently collected and transferred to the City Mortuary for preservation and further procedures. The exact cause and events leading to his collapse remain unknown, intensifying the grief and shock for a man celebrated as the strategic and spiritual core of the premier Dholuo-language station. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing to establish the full facts surrounding his tragic passing.

The news has been met with particular disbelief by his colleagues, who describe a man in apparent good health and high spirits. A close associate at the station revealed, “Festus was very healthy and energetic. We were all preparing to travel with him to Siaya this coming week for the anniversary celebrations of Mayienga Radio. This makes no sense to us.” The trip, intended to mark a milestone for the station he led, now adds a layer of cruel irony to the tragedy.

Festus Amimo was widely regarded not just as a manager, but as a visionary broadcaster, a mentor, and the very embodiment of community-centric journalism with burgeoning political aspirations. Reliable sources close to him confirm that Amimo had been actively laying groundwork and intended to vie for the Nyando Parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Elections, a move that adds profound significance to his untimely departure from the public stage.

The growing sense of public loss was palpable at the City Mortuary, where a steady stream of mourners, colleagues, and political figures began arriving to pay their respects. Among the early visitors was Nairobi MCA Robert Alai, who joined other leaders in viewing the body, highlighting the cross-regional impact of Amimo’s passing and the urgent quest for answers surrounding his death.

“The silence in our studio is deafening, and now it is filled with painful questions,” shared a distraught senior producer at Mayienga FM. “Festus was our anchor and our champion. He wasn’t just building a station; he was nurturing a family and had clear visions for greater service. We are shattered and seeking answers alongside his loved ones.”

The depth of Amimo’s influence was immediately reflected in the stature of those who came forward to mourn. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi expressed his devastation, stating, “I am devastated by the news of the untimely demise of Festus Amimo… He was a consummate and charismatic media man. He was a dependable ally. R.I.P Wuod Awasi.”

Echoing the personal sense of loss, Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo mourned a close friend. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, Festus Amimo,” Omollo said. “Festus was a warm soul, a steady presence and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone… his leadership and passion for storytelling shaped countless voices and strengthened the profession.”

From the Executive Office of the President, State House Deputy Chief of Staff Eliud Owalo conveyed deep sorrow. “It is with deep sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of Festus Amimo Wuod Awasi,” he said, extending condolences to the family and colleagues and praising Amimo’s dedicated service to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) platform.

Earlier, Siaya County Governor James Orengo remembered him as “a calm, collected, and truly gifted soul,” bidding farewell to “my good friend, Wuod Awasi.”

His legacy also resonated internationally. Mr. Daniel Juma Omondi, Africa Regional Representative of the Global Peace Foundation, highlighted Amimo’s professional excellence and broader aspirations. “He harboured legitimate political ambitions to serve the people of Luo Nyanza… His is a profound loss to media, to peacebuilding, and to the future of our region,” Omondi stated, referencing Amimo’s celebrated interview program, “Gari Mokinyi.”

Owino Omondi, Chairman of the Nyanza Journalists’ Association, of which Amimo was Chair, called the death “a monumental loss,” praising him as a “standard-bearer for local content and professional integrity.”

As Mayienga FM broadcasts solemn tributes in place of its regular schedule, the management has vowed to uphold his towering legacy. Plans for his funeral arrangements are underway, with an outpouring of public support expected amidst calls for clarity on the tragic incident that cut short a promising journey from the broadcaster’s chair to the political arena.

Festus Amimo Wa is survived by his wife, children, and an entire nation of listeners and admirers who grieve the silencing of an iconic voice—and the unfulfilled promise of a leader—under a cloud of heartbreaking uncertainty.
