On Tuesday, First Lady Rachel Ruto launched a vital initiative by distributing relief supplies to 39 day secondary schools across Kisumu County at Lwala Kadawa Comprehensive School.
This initiative, spearheaded by the State Department for Children Services, is set to benefit approximately 12,000 learners from five drought-affected sub-counties. It aims to support vulnerable children and families impacted by the ongoing drought, ensuring that learners remain in school.
The event showcased a collaborative effort, bringing together the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, representatives from the Kisumu County Government, National Government officers, and development partners. This gathering highlighted the significance of a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach in supporting children and vulnerable families.
Principal Secretary for Children Services, Carren Ageng’o, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her unwavering support, emphasizing that such initiatives foster hope, inspire confidence, and empower children to envision and strive for a brighter future.
She reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of children across the nation. “The State Department for Children Services is committed to strengthening partnerships and enhancing interventions that protect the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of every child, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances,” she stated.
Earlier that day, the First Lady participated in a women’s empowerment meeting at Kisian Chief’s Camp. At Lwala Kadawa Comprehensive School, Mrs. Ruto distributed shoes and dignity kits to learners, motivating them to pursue their dreams with courage, determination, and confidence.
A dedicated technical team led by Secretary for Children Services, Shem Nyakutu, provided mentorship and essential services while ensuring the equitable distribution of relief supplies, including beans, maize, rice, cooking oil, and other vital items to beneficiary schools.
This four-day intervention aims to enhance learning outcomes by promoting the dignity, health, and wellbeing of learners while addressing barriers that may hinder school attendance.
Students will benefit from complimentary meals made possible by donations of essential food supplies, including maize, rice, beans, and cooking oil, along with dignity kits for girls.
The Child Welfare Society of Kenya and the Directorate of Children Services are overseeing the distribution of these critical supplies.
