The Milimani High Court has rescheduled the hearing for the murder case against Kayole Police Station’s Constable Klinzy Baraza, who faces charges for allegedly killing a mask vendor.
Klinzy stands accused of murdering Boniface Mwangi Kariuki outside Imenti House in Nairobi’s Central Business District during protests on June 17, 2025.
Originally set to begin on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, before Justice Margaret Muigai, the hearing could not proceed as Klinzy’s legal counsel was unavailable. The accused was present at the court, ready to proceed.
Justice Muigai instructed that the case be mentioned before the Deputy Registrar on July 30, 2026, to establish a new hearing date.
Klinzy has remained in custody since his arrest in July 2025, as the court denied his bail while awaiting the hearing and resolution of his murder case.
In her decision to deny bail on February 9, 2026, Justice Muigai emphasized the importance of safeguarding the victim’s family and witnesses involved in the case. She highlighted concerns from reports by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which indicated that some witnesses feared potential harm from the accused if released.
“The application for bail and bond is denied to ensure the safety of the victim, family members, and critical witnesses who, according to reports from the ODPP and IPOA, express fears for their safety. This decision also aims to prevent any possible interference with witnesses,” Justice Muigai stated.
The DPP, represented by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichui, informed the court that the probation report raised significant concerns regarding potential interference with victims and witnesses by the accused.
