Long-serving politician and leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), Martha Wangari Karua, has decisively rejected any notions of returning to the National Assembly of Kenya, including the role of Speaker of the House.
On March 31, 2026, Karua addressed a suggestion made by a social media user on X, who encouraged her to consider the influential position of Speaker, citing the need for urgent reviews of existing laws in the country. The user expressed confidence in her leadership abilities.
“I would love to see you take charge of the National Assembly as the Speaker… we have so many asinine laws in this country that need urgent and serious review… that can only happen with a Speaker who is resolute and knows the work of the NA,” the user stated.
In her response, Karua made her position clear, stating, “Thanks, but I’m done with @NAssemblyKE and have no wish to return to it in any capacity.” This statement effectively puts an end to speculation regarding her potential return to parliamentary leadership.
As discussions about legislative reforms and the quality of laws in Kenya intensify, Karua’s remarks indicate her intention to pursue a different path in the political landscape. She has emerged as a prominent candidate for the presidential position within the United Opposition’s faction as the 2027 general elections approach. In 2022, she served as the running mate to the late Raila Odinga under the Azimio coalition.
Karua continues to be a significant voice in Kenya’s governance and rule of law discussions, frequently advocating for constitutionalism, accountability, and democratic reforms. Her firm stance suggests a commitment to engaging in public affairs beyond the parliamentary sphere, potentially in a higher executive capacity.
