A woman has voluntarily surrendered to the police following the tragic death of her 11-year-old son in a distressing incident at a lodging in Mumbuni, Makueni County.
Authorities reported that the woman spared her two younger children, aged six and three, during the incident, which occurred on March 22. The motive behind this heartbreaking act remains unclear.
On the evening of March 21, the woman checked into the lodging with her three children. The following day, she left to purchase toothpaste from a nearby shop. When she did not return promptly, the lodging manager alerted the police after discovering the room unlocked.
Upon entering the room, the manager found two children sitting on the bed, while the third child lay unconscious. Police confirmed that the deceased, a Grade 4 student at Miau Primary School, was found on the bed with visible marks on his neck, indicating possible strangulation.
Authorities reported that the surviving children were unharmed and remained next to their brother’s body, seemingly unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded. The body has been transferred to the mortuary, pending a postmortem examination, as the children’s family has been contacted for custody during the ongoing investigation.
After the incident, the woman surrendered to the Machakos police station, located several kilometers from the crime scene. She is currently in custody, awaiting transfer to Makueni for processing and potential arraignment.
Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, forming a dedicated team to uncover the motivations behind the woman’s actions. As part of the inquiry, the authorities plan to conduct psychiatric evaluations.
In a separate incident in Kipkaren, Nandi County, a 26-year-old man named Bethwel Kiptanii was found deceased with a wound on the left side of his neck. The motive for this attack is also currently unknown, and police have moved the body to the mortuary for further investigation.
Murder cases have seen a concerning rise, despite ongoing efforts to address them. Many of these cases are connected to love triangles, land disputes, and failed business dealings, according to police investigations. Authorities are committed to resolving these incidents and restoring safety in the community.
