American livestream star Darren Jason Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed, has spoken about the inspiration behind his ambitious 28-day tour across Africa that saw him visit more than 20 countries. The high-energy journey, dubbed Speed Does Africa, gave millions of viewers a front-row seat to the continent’s culture, music, food and daily life.
During the tour, IShowSpeed travelled to countries including Angola, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Ethiopia, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Egypt. In each destination, he interacted with local communities, sampled traditional dishes, danced to cultural music and attended major sporting and social events. His livestreams highlighted Africa’s diversity while promoting tourism in a positive and engaging way.
Speaking after the tour, the 21-year-old content creator described the experience as deeply personal. He explained that financial limitations during his childhood prevented him from travelling, but lessons about world history and ancient civilisations sparked his curiosity about different cultures. He also shared that his African heritage played a major role in the journey. With his mother from Ghana and his father from Liberia, he felt a strong connection to the continent and a desire to explore his roots.
Among the standout moments was attending the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, where he joined passionate fans in celebration. In Nigeria, the trip coincided with two major milestones in his life: surpassing 50 million YouTube subscribers and celebrating his 21st birthday. Both occasions were marked by massive crowds in Lagos who turned out to welcome him.
When asked about his favourite stop, IShowSpeed singled out Kenya. He expressed amazement at the support he received, revealing that nearly 30,000 fans gathered to watch him stream live, creating one of the most memorable scenes of the tour.
