Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i has conveyed a message of encouragement to Kenyan parents as Grade 10 students begin their school year.
On his official X account on Monday, January 12, 2026, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary expressed concern over the increasing financial pressure on families due to rising education costs.
Matiang’i wished Kenyans a productive week and specifically acknowledged the challenges faced by parents with children entering Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), recognizing the financial burden many households are experiencing.
“Fellow Kenyans, as we embark on this new week, I extend my best wishes for a successful and productive time ahead. To the parents of Grade 10 students starting today, I pray for divine favor and support, particularly in managing school fees, an area where this administration has placed considerable strain on our education system, making it increasingly difficult for many families,” Matiang’i remarked.
The former Cabinet Secretary, who implemented significant reforms in the education sector during his tenure, appeared to critique the current administration, suggesting that its policies have imposed undue strain on the education system. He cautioned that, if unaddressed, this situation could hinder access to quality education for numerous Kenyan children.
Matiang’i’s appeal to religious leaders
Matiang’i also urged religious institutions to actively support the nation during what he described as a challenging time.
He adopted a hopeful perspective, stating that despite the current hardships faced by Kenyans, the country can still pursue a brighter future beyond 2027.
“I encourage the church to persist in praying for our nation during this difficult period. With God’s grace, we will overcome these challenges and foster a more equitable society beyond 2027,” he stated.
Transition to senior school
The Grade 10 admission signifies the country’s initial effort to establish structured academic pathways at the senior secondary level, designed to equip students with skills for higher education or the workforce.
Senior school, encompassing Grades 10 to 12, follows the pre-primary, primary (Grades 1–6), and junior school (Grades 7–9) stages. Learners entering Grade 10 will typically be aged between 15 and 17 years.
In contrast to the previous education system, senior school will offer learners the opportunity to specialize in areas that align with their abilities, aspirations, and emerging talents.
