Chief Justice emeritus David Maraga has joined Kenyans in grieving the death of Supreme Court Judge Justice Mohammed Ibrahim.
Maraga shared his condolence message on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. He posted it on social media just hours after Justice Ibrahim died. Maraga called him a brave judge. He said Ibrahim’s legacy will last in Kenya’s legal and constitutional history.
Maraga said the nation lost a top judge, human rights defender, and legal trailblazer.
He learned with deep shock and sadness about the death of his former colleague, Supreme Court Judge Hon. Justice Mohammed Ibrahim. Ibrahim built a strong career in private law, civil society and human rights work, and on the bench until his sudden death that evening.
Maraga said Ibrahim’s life showed courage, strength, and a firm dedication to justice.
Maraga praised how Ibrahim inspired lawyers from overlooked groups. The former chief justice, who wants to run for president in 2027, noted Ibrahim’s barriers broken. He became the first Somali admitted as a High Court advocate.
Ibrahim fought for social justice and human rights. That led to his arrest. He still joined the High Court bench in 2003. His good work there earned him a spot on the Supreme Court. On the Supreme Court, he helped make many key rulings that shaped law and court decisions.
Maraga offered condolences to Ibrahim’s wife and children, his family, Chief Justice Martha Koome, his old Supreme Court colleagues, the whole Judiciary, and the Judicial Service Commission where Ibrahim served until he died. He also grieved with Kenyans who lost a brave judge who served them well.
The Judiciary confirmed Justice Ibrahim’s death on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
He died after a long illness. It ended a standout judicial career of more than 20 years.
The Judiciary named him to its first Supreme Court bench on June 16, 2011. He served until his death. People respected him for his calm style, sharp mind, and fair thinking in major cases.
