Kenya’s President William Ruto has stated that his plans and vision for the country were the same as those of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, whom he defeated in the 2022 presidential elections.
During the ODM founders’ dinners event in Mombasa on Saturday, November 15, 2025, Ruto stated that he had never endured sleepless nights like many of his team before the results of the highly contested elections were announced.
Same plans
Raila’s victory would have led to the implementation of the same policies Ruto is currently undertaking, according to Ruto.
Following the 2022 election, several team members experienced sleepless nights, whereas I slept comfortably. The outcome of the elections held no significance for me. Regardless of whether I won or Raila won, our plans for the country were almost identical.
I firmly believe that, had Raila been in power, he would have achieved housing and universal healthcare coverage in a manner comparable to how I am doing it. We shared that belief together. He also pointed out that most of the plans were in the original ODM Manifesto.
During the event, Ruto implored the newly appointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders to preserve the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The President requested the leaders to prevent ODM from descending into disorder and disputes.
Those in charge of this party, I implore you, do not sabotage the ODM’s ethos, do not let this party become mired in infighting, or splinter apart. Ruto emphasized that this party must remain robust for Raila Amolo Odinga’s sake and in order to preserve his legacy.
As the leader of a different party today, I firmly believe that parties form the bedrock of a robust democracy. He came here to celebrate ODM as a robust party, not a party of suits, not a regional party, but a party with a national presence.
