The controversy surrounding the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi deepened on Tuesday after police recovered a vehicle suspected to have been used in the incident. The car, a Subaru Forester, was found in Juja Township, and its owner—reported to be a close ally of the legislator—was taken into custody.
Authorities are now investigating additional elements of the case, including a bodaboda allegedly used to transport Koimburi from a house in the area to the coffee plantation where he was discovered on Monday morning.
Conflicting Reports on the Alleged Abduction
While initial reports claimed that Koimburi was abducted outside a church in Mugutha, Kiambu County, on Sunday and later found in a coffee plantation in Kiambu, police are now casting doubt on the incident, calling it “political theatrics.”
Inspector General Douglas Kanja stated that forensic analysis showed no evidence of an abduction at the location where the MP was allegedly found. Officers who visited the scene reported discrepancies between the widely circulated video and the actual environment, raising suspicions about the credibility of the claims.
“Upon comparing the vegetation and road dimensions with those in the video, it was established that the two did not match,” Kanja explained, further questioning how Koimburi’s associates knew exactly where to locate him.
Additionally, police revealed that the vehicle used to transport Koimburi to Karen Hospital—registration number KCJ 660P—actually belonged to him, further fueling speculation about the nature of the incident.
Political Reactions and Calls for Investigation
The alleged abduction has sparked fierce debate among political leaders. Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who visited Koimburi at Karen Hospital, dismissed claims that the MP staged the ordeal, calling such assertions a “false narrative.” Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi echoed these sentiments, insisting that abductions must be taken seriously.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has demanded a parliamentary inquiry into the disappearance and reappearance of Koimburi, warning that it could signal a broader security crisis.
“These cases call for a thorough, coordinated investigation. We must demand answers, not just as leaders but on behalf of all Kenyans,” Wetang’ula stated, referencing the recent fatal shooting of Kabondo Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were.
As police continue their probe, the mystery surrounding Koimburi’s case remains unresolved, leaving Kenyans questioning whether this was an actual abduction or a politically motivated spectacle.
