UASU issues 15-day ultimatum to over unpaid salaries and arrears

The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government, demanding payment of December salaries along with all arrears dating back to September.

This ultimatum, effective from January 1, 2025, comes in response to the government’s repeated assurances regarding salary increments as outlined in the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

UASU has warned that if the payments are not made by January 15, 2025, they will initiate another strike. Teachers were left shocked in December when they received their salaries without any increments, despite a clear directive from Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala in her September letter, which called for both salaries and increments to be disbursed.

University officials have claimed that they have not received the necessary funds from the government to implement these payments. The union is also calling for the resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, accusing him of failing to ensure the implementation of the salary agreements.

UASU has made it clear that if a strike becomes necessary, it will be more intense than previous actions. The situation remains tense as the union pushes for immediate action from the government to rectify the ongoing salary issues facing academic staff.
