Zinedine Zidane Set to Replace Didier Deschamps as France Coach

In the wake of a challenging 2-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, France’s national team is poised to make a significant change by replacing Didier Deschamps. This decision marks the conclusion of a remarkable 14-year tenure, during which France reached three consecutive World Cup semifinals.

According to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, “A verbal agreement has been in place for months, as Zinedine Zidane prepares to step in for Didier Deschamps, awaiting the completion of formalities.” ESPN also confirmed in March that the former French star is set to become the next manager after reaching a similar agreement with the federation.

Zidane boasts an impressive coaching resume. He first took the helm of Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s B team, in 2014, before assuming the top position at Real Madrid in early 2016. Under his leadership, the team clinched La Liga in 2017 and secured three consecutive Champions League titles. However, Zidane made a surprising exit just days after the 2018 Champions League final.

His break from coaching was brief, as Real Madrid welcomed him back in early 2019 for another successful two-year stint, during which he added another La Liga title to his accomplishments before departing the club in May 2021.

Zidane has consistently articulated his deep passion and ambition to lead the French national team. “I want to be head coach of France, of course. I hope to fulfill that dream one day,” he stated.

He expressed, “When? That isn’t for me to decide, but I long to complete my journey with the French team. My experience as a player on this team remains the most beautiful chapter of my life.”

Recently, Zidane reportedly declined several offers from top clubs, holding steadfast to his dream of guiding Les Bleus. “This is the pinnacle,” he emphasized, highlighting the significance of the French coaching position to him. “Having experienced this as a player, and now as a coach, the France team is deeply embedded in my aspirations.”

Zidane acknowledged the unique and sometimes daunting responsibility of managing the French team. Nevertheless, he affirmed that stepping into this role would represent the ultimate culmination of his playing and coaching career. “When I express my desire to coach the France team one day, I fully embrace that responsibility. Currently, a team is in place with its objectives. However, if the opportunity arises, I will be ready,” he asserted.
