Donald Trump has lost a legal attempt to overturn his criminal conviction related to hush money payments made to a porn star, following a ruling by U.S. Supreme Court in July that recognized presidential immunity from prosecution for official acts.

Justice Juan Merchan denied Trump’s motion to dismiss the New York state case, which complicates his efforts to assume the presidency for a second term on January 20 without the burden of a criminal record.

Trump’s legal team is pursuing other avenues to challenge the verdict after his recent electoral victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris on November 5. However, Justice Merchan has postponed any rulings on these motions indefinitely following Trump’s election win.

Earlier this month, Trump’s lawyers argued that the charges could hinder his ability to govern effectively. In response, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office indicated there are alternative measures to address Trump’s concerns without resorting to the “extreme remedy” of overturning the jury’s verdict.

As of now, it remains unclear when Justice Merchan will make a ruling on these matters, leaving Trump’s legal challenges unresolved as he prepares for his upcoming presidential term.
