Tragedy strikes New Orleans as SUV attack claims 10 Lives

In a devastating incident in New Orleans’ French Quarter, ten people have been killed and at least 30 others injured after a white Ford SUV drove into a crowd celebrating the arrival of 2025.

The chaos unfolded around 8:30 a.m. when a small explosion was reported, leading to the discovery of an improvised explosive device in the area. The bomb squad safely detonated the device, according to WLWT’s Steven Albritton.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the suspect as “hellbent on creating carnage.” Although no details about the suspect’s identity have been released, witnesses reported that he was wearing full body armor and armed with an assault rifle, seemingly intent on harming as many people as possible.

In the aftermath of the attack, the suspect was killed in a shootout with officers after exiting his vehicle and opening fire, injuring two New Orleans police officers who are now in stable condition. Federal agents will now lead the investigation into what has been classified as a mass casualty event, with the FBI treating the incident as an act of terrorism.

President-elect Donald Trump issued a statement on Truth Social, expressing his support for New Orleans. He criticized rising crime rates in the country and extended condolences to the victims and their families. “The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!” he wrote.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden announced that he has directed his team to ensure that every resource is available for the recovery efforts in New Orleans. He emphasized that there is “no justification for violence of any kind” and commended the local law enforcement for their swift response, which helped prevent further casualties.

Dozens of police officers responded to the scene, cordoning off portions of the road as paramedics and coroner’s office vehicles arrived to assist those injured. The wounded have been transported to five local hospitals for treatment.

Witnesses recounted harrowing experiences, with one individual describing how the SUV sped down the street, running over pedestrians. Another witness reported seeing multiple officers open fire on the suspect as chaos erupted, stating she escaped the scene “by the grace of God.”

As investigations continue, the New Orleans community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event.
