A tragic plane crash involving a Sudanese military transport aircraft has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people in a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum, according to the army-aligned health ministry.
The Antonov plane went down late Tuesday near the Wadi Seidna air base, one of the military’s primary hubs located in Omdurman, northwest of the capital.
The army reported that the crash occurred during takeoff, resulting in fatalities and injuries among both military personnel and civilians. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified since April 2023, leading to significant casualties and chaos.
Once allies, military leaders have now turned into rivals, contributing to a situation that the United Nations has labeled as one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history, with tens of thousands dead and millions displaced.
The fighting has wreaked havoc on Khartoum and other major cities, severely impacting essential infrastructure. Although the army has made recent advances in central Sudan and the capital, the conflict shows no signs of abating.
