Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed his readiness to accept the outcome of the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson elections set for Saturday, February 15. Speaking at a gathering of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders and women supporters at Bomas of Kenya, Raila emphasized that he would return home graciously if he does not secure the position.
With a hopeful spirit, Raila stated, “In God’s grace, I know I shall win. If we go through, we shall be winners; and if we lose, we shall still be winners.” His remarks were made during a special prayer session attended by clergy and ODM officials, aimed at seeking divine support for his candidacy ahead of his trip to Addis Ababa.
The election comes as the tenure of incumbent AUC chair Moussa Faki approaches its conclusion. Raila is relying on backing from various African leaders, who have encouraged him to take on the role, citing that the challenges faced by Kenya resonate with those across the continent.
Despite being considered a frontrunner, Raila faces formidable competition from Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Randriamandrato.
Adding to the optimism, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki expressed confidence in Raila’s chances, mentioning that President William Ruto is one of his strongest supporters. “After the elections, Ruto and Raila agreed that Kenya should field a candidate for the AUC elections. Given their long-standing friendship, they decided Raila should be our representative,” Kindiki noted.
As the election date approaches, Raila remains focused on his mission, prepared to embrace whatever the outcome may be.
