Lake Agro to invest Ksh 20bn in Yala Swamp in Siaya

The National Land Commission NLC has allocated Lake Agro Farm 17,048 acres of land at the Yala Swamp in Siaya county for commercial agricultural use. The NLC commissioners Esther Mathenge, Reginald Okumu, Tiya Galgalo and James Tuitoek made the determination after holding a series of public hearings of the intended allocation between in Siaya.

The investor, Agro Farm will now cash out Sh20 billion in large scale fish, rice, soya and sugar cane farming to reclaim Yala Swamp. However, Agro Farm is expected to enter into an MoU with the county government of Siaya and local communities to capture roles and responsibilities of parties for purposes of resource management anchored in the Yala Delta Land Use Development Plan.

The project will bring more than 2,000 employment opportunities directly and retain more than 200 local contractors and suppliers.

The investor has already spent Sh55 million on the parcel and has an elaborate Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR).

These plans include; scholarship programmes for students and pupils in the community schools as well community infrastructure development. Community infrastructure includes hospitals, school and roads.

The plan will help raising the living standards of the locals and boost the agriculture sector in the region.
