A tragic shark attack off Egypt’s Red Sea coast has resulted in the death of a tourist and injuries to another, authorities reported on Sunday.
Both victims have been identified as Italian nationals, according to a source from the Italian foreign ministry.
The incident occurred in the northern Marsa Alam area, where the Egyptian environment ministry stated that a 48-year-old man from Rome was killed and a 69-year-old man was injured. Both were promptly taken to a hospital in Port Ghalib, located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Marsa Alam.
In response to the attack, authorities have closed the area to swimmers for two days. The ministry noted that the incident took place in “deep waters outside the designated swimming area.”
The Red Sea is a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant marine life, attracting divers from around the world. It serves as a vital source of employment and foreign currency for Egypt, which is currently grappling with its worst economic crisis.
This incident follows a previous tragedy last month when a large wave capsized a dive boat off Marsa Alam, resulting in the deaths of at least four people.
Shark attacks are not uncommon in the Red Sea, and marine experts warn that unregulated construction, over-fishing, and irresponsible tourism practices are altering the ecosystem and impacting shark behavior. In June 2023, a shark attack in Hurghada claimed the life of a Russian tourist, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety in the region.
